POLICE are warning people to be vigilant following the attack that left a young woman for dead in Woodford Green.

They are no closer to finding out how Yvonne Newham, 24, ended up with a fractured skull and blood clot that could have killed her after she left Woodford Tube station on Friday, October 12.

Another woman was robbed of her handbag on the other side of the station by a black man just two hours later, but police do not know if there is a link.

Detective Inspector Richard Bond, who is leading the investigation, said: "People can be targeted as they walk away from busy Underground stations into small roads. Be conscious of your surroundings."

Miss Newham, a telesales operator from Hitchin, was found by a passing driver, lying on the kerb in Kings Avenue at 7.50pm. She was rushed to Whipps Cross Hospital with injuries to her head that could have killed her.

She wasn walking to her boyfriend's house in Woodford Green when the incident occurred. Miss Newman was captured on CCTV cameras at 7.34pm as she left Woodford station. She called her boyfriend on her mobile phone to tell him that she was on her way, but he missed the call.

Her bag was missing when she was discovered and police believe that she had been attacked.

DI Bond said: "One of her credit cards was used in a garage in Forest Gate the following day. Another card was found by somebody but the credit card company told them to throw it away. We would like that one back to use for fingerprints and DNA."

After the incident, Miss Newham could not even remember who her boyfriend was. She has now been released from hospital but she is still unable to remember what happened.

DI Bond said: "Yvonne has been released from hospital but she is far from being out the woods. She is still very poorly.

"We are trying to find witnesses who saw her at the station or walking along that street."

Miss Newham's father, Christopher, said: "She is a bit shaken up. The doctors seem to think her memory will come back.

"I am worried that she has not remembered the details of what happened. She remembers a few bits, but the actual incident is blocked out."

Anyone with information should ring Sgt Neil Lemon or DI Richard Bond on 8345 2631.
