THE district's three flood alleviation schemes prevented serious flooding during Sunday's continuous downpours, according to Epping Forest Council chief executive John Burgess.
Other work carried out since last year's floods was also a major factor in avoiding a repeat of last October's problems.
He told Monday's executive committee that more than 1,000 sandbags had been provided in Waltham Abbey, and he praised the joint efforts by the district's staff and Waltham Abbey Town Council in providing a swift response on Sunday.
He said between two and three inches of rain had fallen.
"The work we've done with the Environment Agency, Thames Water and our own flood alleviation schemes in North Weald, Loughton and Thornwood have certainly stopped serious flooding this time.
"The work we've done with clearance, water courses and gullies has meant we've been very fortunate."
But he said the council was not being complacent, and added: "There's an awful lot of the winter to come. We're doing everything possible."
