ALTHOUGH George a Cavalier King Charles spaniel did not win the World Agility Championships in Portugal, his owner, Richard Wagner, is not complaining.

Mr Wagner, of Lincolnsfield, Epping, said: "I'm very pleased about his performance as he ran two clear rounds in the team event, even though he has been suffering from back problems since his selection."

Mr Wagner, 33, and his dog were part of a team of nine handlers and their dogs who represented the UK in the two-day championships.

George was selected after taking part in Crufts at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, when he was involved in both individual and team events for small dogs.

This is the first time Britain has participated in the prestigious competition due to the recent introduction of the Pet Passport Scheme.

Mr Wagner said: "Although we didn't win anything, it was a good experience for us. There was tremendous team spirit and we came away feeling that with hard work we can do better in the future."
