AN appeal, launched by a Sidcup hospital to improve facilities for its child cancer patients, has almost reached its target.

The Acorn Appeal, set up by Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup, to raise £300,000 and lots of local groups and schools have been involved with the fundraising.

So far it has raised £250,000, with more money still coming in. And work has already begun on spending some of the cash available.

Two fully-equipped, high-dependency units are being created for children who require specialist treatment. The rest of the money will be spent on providing en-suite bedrooms, kitchenette, family room, play area and a quiet room for children and their families.

Children with cancer who have to undergo treatment for infections or chemotherapy may need long periods of rest or isolation, which can make them bored or depressed. It can also be stressful for parents. The new facilities will enable parents to stay with their children and offer better surroundings.
