A new mobile phone recycling service was launched this week which will help inhabitants of the Third World keep in touch.

The environmentally-friendly service, set up by popular demand, is being run by Richmond Council and the Mobile Phone Recycling Appeal.

The charity ensures that the mobile phones are sent to developing countries with no landline infrastructure.

The council has received dozens of mobile phones already and would like to encourage more residents to hand in their old mobile phones to be recycled.

Councillor Katie Gent, cabinet member for the environment said: Over 34 million people in the UK own a mobile phone and millions change their phone every year. It is sad and surprising that only five per cent recycle their old phones.

To recycle your phone, drop them off preferably with the charger at the Atrium in the Civic Centre, York Street, Twickenham, or at the Waste and Recycling Centre in Townmead Road, Kew.
