THE Rotary Club of Lewisham celebrated its 75th birthday in style on October 12 at a gala dinner at the HSBC Sports Club, in Beckenham.

Helping to mark the occasion were fellow Rotarians and guests from Greenwich, Woolwich, Catford, Brixton, Deptford and Forest Hill. Also attending were District Governor-elect Graham Williams and assistant District Governor Colin Bryant with their partners.

The evening's speaker was Chris Hare Lewisham Theatre's witty and distinguished manager and a long-time friend of Rotary. Hugh Benson, the Club President, hosted the evening.

The Rotary Club of Lewisham was founded in 1926 by local businessmen to provide a service to the community. Over the past 75 years the club has carried out many acts of unsung service in the community and has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charities.

It founded and supports the Darby and Joan Club in Lewisham. It supports the St Christopher Hospice and is involved in the Lewisham Youth Makes Music programme, bringing opportunities of music and dance to children and young adults.

Internationally, it has contributed to the eradication of polio a Rotary International project, to Water Aid, the Sight Savers, to the Jaipur Limb Foundation and many others.

It annually hosts a scholar to London from overseas and extends the hand of Rotary friendship to its sister club in Italy.

The club always welcomes new members and guests.

Its members include those from the business, professional and community service including retired active members.

It meets every Monday evening for a meal and a talk at the Old Colfeians Sports Club, Eltham Road, London. Should anyone wish to come along, call 07973 826369 for more details.
