Black history month concludes tonight, October 31, with a play by a local playwright.

Garvey's Last Soldier was written by the novelist and playwright David Simon, from Eltham.

The story is set in south London's black community in 1999 and is portrayed through a theatre-cabaret crossover of narration, percussion, dance, song and R 'n' B.

Simon describes the plot as "a thriller-love story about liberation, education, murder and correspondance." He said he hopes the play will be staged again in Lewisham next Easter.

The performance runs from 6.30pm to 9.30pm in Woolwich Public Hall, Market Street, Woolwich.

Also today, catch the last day of an exhibition at Age Exchange Centre, Blackheath, which tells the stories of immigrants to Britain in the 1940s, 50s and 60s.

The exhibition marks a partnership between the Age Exchange Centre and the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, focusing on those who emigrated by boat. For more information, call 0208 312 6608.
