Sutton Magistrates Court has received a stay of execution by capital legal chiefs while they consider the Auld Report into the reform of the criminal justice system.
The Greater London Magistrates' Courts Authority (GLMCA) was due to make a decision on a reform package, which would probably have spelt the end for the Wallington court, last Tuesday, but has deferred judgement until November 21.
Among his recommendations, Lord Justice Auld proposes restricting the right to trial by jury, potentially enlarging magistrates' role in the system.
