know your rights: Sutton workers are being denied the four weeks paid leave they have by right, according to the boroughs citizens advice bureaux (CAB). An increasing number of employees are approaching the CAB claiming they are losing out on holiday entitlements, despite legislation granting the vast majority of full and part-time staff four weeks off per year. The bureaux are warning employers to swot up on current regulations by telephoning ACAS on 020 7396 5100, while their advice to aggrieved employees is to approach their bosses first and then visit their local CAB if the problem persists.

court reprieve: Sutton Magistrates Court has received a stay of execution from capital legal chiefs while they consider the Auld Report into the reform of the criminal justice system. The Greater London Magistrates Courts Authority (GLMCA) was due to make a decision on a reform package, which would probably have spelt the end for the Wallington court, last Tuesday, but has deferred judgement until November 21. Among his recommendations, Lord Justice Auld proposes restricting the right to trial by jury, potentially enlarging magistrates role in the system.

final appearance: A Sutton preacher has made it to the final of The Times Preacher of the Year 2001 competition. Martin Camroux, Minister of Trinity United Reformed Church and Methodist Church in Sutton, is one of five preachers heading for the sky in the national final. Martin will take part in a preach-off event in Oxford Street on November 28 to see if he can take the title.
