Chelsea were left bitterly disappointed after only taking a point from their trip to Pride Park following a fiery match.
The visitors got off to the worst possible start when Fabrizio Ravenelli put Derby ahead from a possible off side position after Daryl Powell's shot was not held by keeper Mark Bosnich.
The Rams were the better side for most of the opening period and the Blues were fortunate not to fall further behind but Bosnich proved to be in inspired form.
Just minutes into the second half Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink scored his 10th goal of the season to get Chelsea back on terms. That spurred the visitors on but they found it impossible to score a winner.
Although Chelsea have lost only once in the Premiership they have drawn far too often.
Next Sunday they play Ipswich at home a game they must win if they are not to lose further ground in the Premiership.
