100 years ago.......two respectably dressed lads, Charles Watkins, 18, living at High Grove Villas, Cavendish Road, and John Chalmers, 17, of 110, Alderbrook Road, were charged with being guilty of disorderly conduct in St John's Road, Clapham Junction.

PC V391V said he was on duty on Sunday evening when he saw the prisoners jostling people, mainly girls, and trying to trip them up with their sticks. Mr Garrett said he was determined to put down such conduct, and fined the prisoners, who offered no excuse for their conduct, 10s each.

General Election The countryside swing in favour of the Conservatives, although represented in the Wandsworth division, was not sufficient to bring about a change in the borough representation and once again there are two Conservative and two Labour members.

AND... Wandsworth Prison, in Heathfield Road, was opened 100 years ago, when it was known as the Surrey House of Correction. It was built to fit in with the idea that men become worse criminals by being allowed to talk to each other about crime.

New equipment has been installed by Gartons at its Battersea glucose factory in York Road to eliminate industrial smells.

Wandsworth public services committee was told on Monday that due to turbine failure it will be a month before tests could begin to eliminate the Battersea smell'.

AND... Putney's only live theatre, Group 64 in Upper Richmond Road, will be opening its doors after a year's closure caused by financial problems.

The opening production will be A Man for all Seasons, being staged next week.
