Morden's David Gray is one of 211 competitors attempting to win a wild card into next February's Benson & Hedges Masters at Wembley.
The 21-year-old, will compete in the Benson & Hedges Snooker Championship at Mansfield, a tournament for players outside the world's top 16.
Gray will attempt to win the tournament for the second time, after winning in 1998.
Should Gray win he would pick up £5,000, a gold trophy and gain a wild card into the Wembley event.
Gray, who has the distinction of being the last person to defeat current World Champion Ronnie O'Sullivan at the Crucible, faces a bye into the third round. There he will face the winner of Eddie Barker v Anthony Massey/Andrew Clark.
