Fulham finds itself in a unique position in the Premiership this season: it is the only ground which still accommodates fans standing on terraces.

Of course, Fulham fans are well used to this, as three sides of Craven Cottage consist either completely or partly of standing areas. It is the Premiership's visiting fans for whom standing is a novelty. Judging by the feedback Fulham Supporters' Club has received, it is a novelty the majority is enjoying, citing the improved atmosphere, the ability to watch the game with friends regardless of ticket number and the cheaper admission prices.

Thus far, all reports suggest security and safety standards have been maintained.

Under the terms of the Taylor Report, this is the last season standing can occur at Fulham FC. These rules were the main reason for the widespread backing of the club's proposal to redevelop the ground into a 30,000 capacity, all-seater stadium it seemed the only way of ensuring the on-going viability of top-flight football at our historic ground.

Some people are now wondering whether the club was forced to make final plans too early.

Across Europe, calls for new stadia to include standing areas are increasingly being taken seriously, and incidents of security breaches in all-seater stadia (such as Millwall fans ripping up and throwing seats at Coventry recently) lend weight to the arguments.

It will be interesting to see how Fulham react to latest developments, as they push ahead in their plans for a new stadium.
