The final race in the 2001 Thames River Series for Merlin Rocket sailing dinghies will take place at Putney Embankment on November 4.

The Ranelagh Sailing Club, in association with the Royal Thames Yacht Club, is the organiser of the open meeting.

On the day Merlin Rocket sailing dinghies will fly their spinnaker sails while racing at their historic place of birth, Putney Embankment.

The Ranelagh Sailing Club will conclude the River Thames Series with the traditional autumn open meeting for Merlin Rocket sailors from all over the country.

Favourite is last year's winner Duncan Salmon, from Wembley, who will have to defend his trophy against a strong home fleet from Ranelagh.

The first Merlin Rocket Kate', was commissioned in 1945 by a syndicate from the Ranelagh Sailing Club and built by Jack Holt, a boat building neighbour on Putney embankment.

The 14ft long Kate has recently been restored by Mervyn Allen who will sail her with wooden mast and cotton sails, featuring the historic sail number one.

However, Kate has little no chance to win the event. Modern boats are high-tech with computer designed hulls and built using the most advanced materials.

In fact, Merlin Rockets form one of the few development classes of the Royal Yachting Association.

Most successful yacht designers in the UK have also been involved in Merlin design.
