An energy day advising older people on how to conserve energy in the home is being held by Age Concern Wandsworth, in Tooting.

Tomorrow's (Friday) event, at the charity's offices, at 202 Tooting High Street, is promoting energy saving tips for households occupied by older couples or those living alone, before winter sets in.

Free low-energy lightbulbs will be given away on the day and people who bring along a recent gas or electricity bill can compare savings with different energy packages.

Age Concern has linked up with PowerGen to provide a cost-efficient package which includes an extra cold weather payment in addition to government help.

People aged over 60 whose homes run on gas can claim £9.66 for every day between December and February, when the temperature drops below zero.

Energy adviser for Age Concern Wandsworth Barrie McKay said: "We do not always stop to think about the impact of letting a tap drip or leaving the television on standby overnight.

"Vast savings can be made by being on the ball when it comes to energy efficiency, after all, we are not only protecting our pennies, but also the environment.

"If people are aware about household appliances and the amount of energy they exude, this will help the environment in the long run."
