Members of Sharks Swimming Club were in tremendous form at the Phoenix Amateur Swimming Association's 8th open gala held at Colchester's Leisure World.

Nine of the club's 28-strong squad live locally and they returned with 25 medals 13 of them gold.

Erith's Sarah Louise-Casey led the gold strike with a superb haul of four first places 100 metres breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle races, plus the 8 x 50-metre relay, as well a bronze in the 100m butterfly.

Samantha Mercer, from Sidcup, won a trio of golds in the 50 and 100m backstroke, plus the 100m freestyle.

Welling's Adam Baker collected four medals two golds in the 100m backstroke and 8 x 50-metre relay, as well as silver and bronze in the 100 and 50m breaststroke finals respectively.

Iain Ambrose, from Swanley, won a full set after winning gold in the 8 x 50-metre relay, slver in the 100m backstroke and bronze in the 100m individual medley.

Erith's Emma Kent emulated Iain in three 100-metre finals by winning gold in the backstroke, silver in the freestyle, plus a backstroke bronze.

Two other Erith swimmers brother and sister Jamie and Tina Rushbrook also did their best to boost the Sharks' medal collecton.

Tina won three 50-metre medals a silver in the freestyle, plus bronzes in both breast and backstroke events, while Jamie was also part of the successful 8 x 50-metre relay squad, as well as winning silver in the 50m breaststroke.

Sidcup's Katherine Mannion won gold in the 50m backstroke, plus a bronze in the freestyle over the same distance.

Matthew Griffiths, from Erith, completed the squad but he unluckily just missed out on a medal when fourth in the 100m.

Katherine, meanwhile, swam the second leg of Sharks' freestyle relay team which won gold at the Astra National Championships in the Pontypool Leisure Centre a week before.

The Sharks Swimming Club trains at the Eric Liddle Sports Centre in Mottingham on Monday evenings and encourages people with any kind of disability to join.
