Members of Sharks Swimming Club were in tremendous form at the Phoenix Amateur Swimming Association's 8th open gala held at Colchester's Leisure World.

Twelve of the club's 28-strong squad live locally and Grove Park's Billy Morgan led the way by winning three golds 100 metres breast and backstroke, as well as a member of the 8 x 50-metre relay squad.

Ben Summers, from Brockley, also won three medals silver in the 100m freestyle, plus two bronzes in the 100m breast and backstroke races.

Eltham's Trisha Barrett won a silver in the 50m backstroke, while the other local members of the squad all came from Mottingam, where the Sharks club is based.

Rachel Hill won double gold in the 50 and 100m freestyle finals, while Clare Sawyer was a 50m freestyle gold medalist in her category.

Kate Sheridan won two silvers in the 50m freestyle and 100m backstroke, as well as a 100m freestyle bronze, while Kirsty Turner ensured her place on the podium by winning a silver in the 50m backstroke.

Caroline Gray did not manage to win a medal, although did come a fine fifth in the 100m backstroke event but her son, James went home with three medals. He won gold in his category of the 100m, as well as silvers in the 50 and 100m backstroke.

Meanwhile, the Instrell family had not two but three representatives.

Mother Kay, who is also the club coach, was out of luck although she did manage a good fifth in the 100m breaststroke, but her son Jonathan and daughter Anna-Marie each won three medals.

Jonathan won gold in the 100m backstroke, plus silvers in both 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle.

Anna-Marie won a full set by taking gold in the 8 x 50m freestyle relay, silver in the 100m freestyle, plus a 100m breaststroke bronze.

Steven Rann and James Gray were also gold-medalists when swimming the first and anchor legs respectively of the Sharks' relay team which won at the Astra National Championhips, held in the Pontypool Leisure Centre a few days earlier.

The Sharks Swimming Club trains at the Eric Liddle Sports Centre in Mottingham on Monday evenings and encourages people with any kind of disability to join.
