TENANTS of Epping Forest Council are to be consulted on proposals to update their tenancy agreement.

The proposed changes would affect all existing and future tenants.

The proposals include setting out the conditions for recovery of rent arrears more clearly.

Additional conditions would give the council greater powers to deal with nuisance and anti-social behaviour and prohibit smoking in communal areas of sheltered housing schemes, which is in line with current policy.

The new agreement would include advice on the council's Compliments and Complaints scheme, the Compensation for Tenants improvements scheme, the council's consultation and information commitments and advice to tenants on obtaining household contents insurance.

Housing portfolio holder Stephen Murray said: "We have already consulted and taken expert advice on the proposed changes to bring the tenancy agreement up to date.

"The next step will be a special notice advising all tenants of the proposed changes and inviting comments. Only when we have consulted everyone will we come back to the executive committee with our final recommendations."
