CASES of Tuberculosis in Enfield are on the rise according to recent figures released by the local health authority.

Since 1987 cases of the disease in the borough have increased from 19 a year to 83 in the year 2000 and Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Health authority is growing concerned.

The authority is now planning to tackle the problem by pumping more than £312,000 to help improve resources needed to control the problem.

It hopes to secure the funds soon and is currently in talks with the local primary care trusts to provide a boost to TB care.

The diverse and mobile population of London combined with higher areas of deprivation play a key part spreading the disease.

The disease is treatable and curable by drug therapy but the course of drugs must be completed. It is a difficult situation to tackle as TB affects hard to reach groups including the homeless, drug abusers and those living with HIV.
