It's not all bad

I am very pleased I accepted my invitation to the Bexley Environmental Challenge 2001 annual award ceremony. It proved to be a most stimulating and enlightening evening. Sadly, we are always hearing of mindless vandalism so it was refreshing to see how children, some as young as five, as well as some elderly people, worked so hard to improve the environment. Societies such as the Orbit Housing Association did the same. The video shown gave brief details of a very wide range of projects by potential prize winners and was really informative. It restored my faith in the human race. It was also gratifying to learn of all the local firms which offered their support by donating prizes and trophies. People should remember, it is their environment. Find out more by calling Mark Taylor, Bexley Council on 020 8303 7777 extension 3618 or visit www.bexley.gov.uk

Tory shambles

David Evernett's letter (News Shopper, November 14) claims Labour has, yet again, stolen all David's and the Tories' ideas. It must be a very confusing world for former Tory MPs and the dwindling and ageing band of Tories. They just can't resist claiming credit for everything. Of course, Mr Evernett is right. Media attention is focused elsewhere. However, we thought Mr Evernett's appearance in print, after such a long absence, was to take attention away from the difficulties the Tories are experiencing with one of their own Councillor Holland. Depending on your source, this has something to do with the non-payment of Council Tax and/or whom they supported in the Tory leadership stakes.

Funny world!

Margaret Thatcher once commented "It's a funny old world". How true. In 2001 we have a Labour Prime Minister touring the world on behalf of an American president. We have Labour ministers implementing (rather badly) Conservative policies. We have also a Labour MP in Bexleyheath and Crayford (unexpectedly and undeservedly re-elected in June) who appears silent and inactive.
