AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after a man was crushed to death under a train outside Eltham station.

The man, who has yet to be identified, was standing on the tracks outside Eltham station when the 15.09 Connex service from Dartford to Charing Cross hit him last Thursday.

Paramedics and an air ambulance were scrambled, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Connex spokesman said: "Clearly this tragic incident under-lines the extreme peril of trespassing on railway lines.

"Not only are there fast and fairly quiet trains which may hit and kill the trespasser but the third rail is electrified at 750 volts, three-times the domestic supply, and contact with the rail will almost certainly lead to death.

"We do work closely with Railtrack and British Transport Police to try and prevent trespass on the railway."
