Not even the weather could dampen the spirits of a team of postmen who batted for charity to raise funds for Kingston Hospital's cancer unit appeal.

The posties, who work at the Villiers Road sorting office in Kingston, battled it out on the cricket pitch watched by a 100-strong crowd.

Play may have been disrupted by the weather but the teams, which included players from local cricket clubs, kept up their spirits in the knowledge that they were helping to raise vital funds towards the cancer unit.

The appeal holds a special place in the hearts of the postmen who lost three of their colleagues to cancer.

An annual bike ride in memory of Eamon Hayes, Neville Rendle and Wes Rowbottom, raises money for cancer charities.

Postman Tony Best, who organised the match, said: "The weather wasn't really bad.

"It was cold and miserable and raining off and on for most of the day, but it didn't stop the play.

"We managed to play one game. The winning side scored 176 all out."

Tony, who plays for New Malden Haraambes, thanked the staff at Decca sports and social club in Tolworth for providing a venue for the cricket match.
