A CLASSICAL concert has raised more than £5,000 for charity.

Last week, former BBC Young Musician of the Year Freddy Kempf performed at The Radlett Centre for the Mayor of Hertsmere's charity concert.

Mr Kempf performed works by Schubert, Ravel and Chopin. Each piece was introduced by broadcaster, author and former Radlett resident Richard Baker and both men provided their services for free.

The proceeds from the concert will go to Mayor Stuart Nagler's charities, The Macmillan Cancer Relief and Crimebeat.

Speaking after the event, Councillor Nagler said the concert was one of the most outstanding events of the year, with a great audience and super performers.

Mr Kempf, who performed "one of the hardest programmes he's done" and returned for an encore, was rewarded with a standing ovation.

Councillor Nagler said: "I'm so grateful to the people who supported it. It was a very memorable evening for me, a great emotional experience. It was just outstanding."

Councillor Nagler, who will not be standing for re-election, will hold further charity events before he steps down as mayor in May. Plans for a golf day are already taking shape and he hopes to arrange a children's event, possible with the Tweenies.
