DEVELOPERS of the new town around the Dome want to build over Blackwall Tunnel approach road to gain more space.

Meridian Delta Ltd, the consortium planning an urban transformation on the Greenwich Peninsula, intends to create a new town and first-class entertainment venue.

And it wants to cover the tunnel approach ramps on the A102, between the planned Dome Central and Meridian Gardens areas, to improve pedestrian access.

The 199-acre site, divided into distinct areas, will feature 10,000 homes, a 26,000 sports and entertainment arena situated inside the Dome structure, shops offices, and Millennium Square one of the largest open spaces in London.

Meridian Delta's Lawrence Robertson said: "Covering over the A102 would make people less aware of the roads and enable us to claim that space back."

It also has plans to put car parks inside or under buildings, screened from view by shops or beneath landscaped courtyards.

A public consultation meeting will be held at 7pm tonight and an exhibition will be held from 1pm to 8.30pm tomorrow, in the Forum@Greenwich, Trafalgar Road.

It then moves to St Mary's Community Centre, 180 Eltham High Street, on February 5 and 6. For more information, call Susie Wilson on 020 8331 4210.
