A massive clear-up operation is under way in Colliers Wood after a blocked drain spewed gallons of raw sewage across residential streets, polluting scores of gardens.

The major blockage, which was first reported to Thames Water at 9pm on Tuesday, January 21, left gardens in Christchurch Road, Runnymede and Liberty Avenue submerged in 12 inches of filth, with some sewage spilling through letterboxes.

Thames Water admitted the problem was so bad it could not be cleared for more than three days, while the correct equipment was put in place.

Disgusted residents, who are still reeling from the clean-up operation after the same drain overflowed a year ago, with similar disastrous consequences, had to hop over walls to avoid wading through the putrid mess.

Christchurch Road resident Audrey Scarlett said: "Considering we live in a first world country, the conditions are appalling."

A fellow resident added: "There were children standing at a bus stop and raw sewage was running out past their feet.

"It is a complete disaster."

A spokesman for Merton Council confirmed it was aware of the problem and said the authority had liaised with Thames Water to get the problem cleared, but delays occurred due to "poor communication" within the water company.

Thames Water apologised to residents for the delay in clearing the problem, which was due to a build-up of fat and grease in the drain.

A spokesman added the sewer would be thoroughly cleaned to ensure it was at its full capacity and hopefully prevent future problems.
