CONTROVERSIAL plans to levy car parking charges at rural parks have been withdrawn following outrage from residents.

Bromley Council had proposed to introduce pay-and-display meters in High Elms Country Park, Keston Ponds and Keston Common.

But councillors decided to shelve the plans after protesters claimed the 50 pence-an-hour charge would deter people from using the parks.

Councillor Neil Reddin, executive member for leisure and culture, said: "In view of the outcomes of the public consultation exercises we have undertaken, it is clear that there is little support for the proposal.

"The people of Bromley have spoken and we have been happy to heed their concerns."

Ramblers, dog exercisers and other park users, welcomed the news.

Anita Streek, 49, of Kent Close, Orpington, said: "The council has just been scratching around for ways to raise money but I'm very pleased they have withdrawn their silly idea to charge park users.

"High Elms and Keston Ponds belong to the people. The council should encourage people to visit the countryside and not make them feel they have to keep an eye on the time."
