A vast majority of the Capital's businesses would back a London bid for the 2012 Olympics and believe the games will bring them extra economic benefits, a survey says.

Eight of ten businesses questioned by the London Chamber of Commerce backed a London bid for hosting rights for the Games.

Almost two thirds of the three hundred companies who answered the survey said they also thought there would be extra benefits for business in London hosting the Olympics.

London Chamber's Chief Executive, Colin Stanbridge, said the survey was another demonstration of strong support in the business world for a 2012 London Olympics. "London has the skills, acumen and creativity needed to bid for, and successfully stage, an Olympics," he said.

The Chamber has now passed the results of the survey to the Government, who were due to make a decision on supporting the bid, after a cabinet meeting tomorrow.

It is possible ministers may delay considering the bid for a week while the situation in Iraq dominates the political agenda.

British Olympic officials say the bid would fail without Government support.
