Oxfam campaigners are hailing the success of a demonstration at Nestl's Croydon headquarters last year after the company slashed a compensation claim against the Ethiopian government by millions.

The coffee giant announced last week it had reduced a compensation claim from the country from £3.7 million down to £900,000.

Oxfam's campaigner for Croydon Francesca Arhin said: "Today's decision is a victory for the Ethiopian people and a victory for the 42,000 people around the world who wrote to Nestl demanding that they drop the claim. This shows the power of the consumer and the fact that companies can no longer get away with putting people before profits."

She added: "We are confident that that demonstration was really the start and it gathered momentum from there."
