Lambeth's first green housing scheme has got the go-ahead from Lambeth's planning applications committee.
The environmentally-friendly housing plan in Brixton forms part of a £60 million regeneration scheme for the Angell Town Estate, chosen by residents in an extensive consultation exercise.
The development also marks the birth of Lambeth's first wholly eco-friendly social housing scheme.
Features include a timber frame and a roof generating 20 kilowatts-plus of electricity for communal lighting, while reducing carbon dioxide greenhouse gas emissions by about 14 tonnes annually.
The building will also have an innovative living roof, which will act as its water recycling system. Native wetland species including irises, water mint and marsh marigolds will give extra visual appeal, improved biodiversity and insulating qualities.
Planning applications committee chairman Councillor Brian Palmer said: "I hope it will be the first of many such innovative eco-friendly new buildings in the borough."
