MORE than £2m is needed to restore Manor House Library to its former glory.
Lewisham Mayor Steve Bullock gave approval to apply for Heritage Lottery Funding (HLF) for the refurbishment of the Grade II-listed villa in Manor Lane, Lee, at a cabinet meeting, last week.
The total cost of the work is £3.6m and if the bid for around £2m is successful, the council will contribute £1.2m from its capital programme a commitment re-affirmed by the Mayor.
The house is currently occupied by Manor House Library and a resource centre for Community Education Lewisham.
According to the council the library will remain as the building's main user, with other community uses being catered for.
Specialists Acanthus Lawrence Wrightson (ALW) has drawn up a preliminary scheme and cost for the project which will be used as the basis of the submission for HLF cash.
Proposed work on the house will follow the £1.1m restoration of Manor House Gardens, officially opened three years ago, which uncovered an 18th Century ice house.
