OLDER people living in the west Hertfordshire area are being encouraged to get out of the house during June by a partnership scheme run by British Gas and Help The Aged.

The annual Stepping Out campaign is aimed to combat social isolation among older people, many of whom the organisers believe severely restrict their social activities and use of telephone due to cost.

The month-long national activity programme aims to address key factors contributing to isolation and promote healthy and active ageing by encouraging tens of thousands of older people to take part in Stepping Out which runs from Sunday until the end of June.

Partners and activities in the south of England include the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, Haynes Motor Museum, the Royal Horticultural Society, Privilege Holiday Club, Grange and Ramada Jarvis Hotels and the Ambassador Theatre Group.

Nearly 58,000 older people took advantage of the hundreds of discounts on offer during Stepping Out last year.

This summer, older people can save money with a diverse range of deals, including discounted travel by rail and road, as well as reduced entrance fees to houses and gardens, castles, museums, hotels, theatres and local tourist attractions.

Details of the many offers available can be found in the Stepping Out brochure, available from the Stepping Out hotline on 01227 866 895.

Anyone is able to order a Stepping Out brochure, including community members on behalf of older friends, neighbours and relatives.
