SHOPPERS in Watford town centre have been making good use of the Police Information Point (PIP) since its introduction 1996.

Hertfordshir of the enquiryies they have received. The results show that 74 per cent of visitors wanted directions, 16 per cent wanted advice, eight per cent wanted messages passed on to other officers and two per cent were handing in lost property and children or reporting crimes.

Shops in the vicinity of the PIP have reported a drop in shoplifting on days when the Special Constables are there.

Special Constabulary commandant Peter Mould said: "The Police Information Point is not only a valuable source of information and advice for the community, but also offers reassurance for shoppers and shop owners on Saturdays in the busy town centre.

"It's amazing how many people just want to come up for a chat and express their support for the police service."
