Support for London's bid to hold the Olympic games in 2012 begins in Wandsworth next week, with the opening of a new exhibition focusing on the capital's Olympic past.

The British Olympic Association (BOA) is hoping its showcase of Olympic artefacts will encourage public support for the bid, which seeks to bring the games back to the capital for the first time in more than half a century.

The exhibition at Wandsworth museum focuses primarily on the two previous occasions the games have been held in London, in 1908 and 1948. Exhibits include medals, posters and other objects, such as the torch used to carry the Olympic flame to the 1948 games.

A spokesman for the Wandsworth-based BOA said: "This is a unique opportunity for visitors to view material from the BOA collection, which was founded in 1905 to develop the Olympic movement in England and to send the British team to each Olympic Games."

The exhibition, which also features information on the current bid, runs until Sunday, June 6.
