The first phase of Centrale, Croydon's new £100million shopping centre, was completed on Thursday when Next opened its North End store to the public.

Developer St Martin's Property Group will complete the first phase of development, comprising three flagship stores for Next, international fashion retailers Zara and Aldo, over the next three weeks.

Furniture retailer The Pier has signed up for a 7,000 sq ft store on the upper mall while lingerie giant La Senza has joined the growing list of Centrale tenants by taking a 3,185 sq ft unit.

The opening of Centrale's second phase, including a new 1,000-space multi-storey car park, has been re-scheduled for Easter 2004 to accommodate a new restaurant gallery which was granted planning permission in March.

Tenants signed up include Allsports, and Ernest Jones, with a further four retailers in the pipeline.

The final phase of Centrale will be completed by Autumn 2004.
