Pet owners who allow their dogs to mess on public pavements could soon find themselves falling foul of the law and earning a hefty fine in the process.

From June 6, Croydon Council will be introducing tough new measures including on the spot £50 fines for dropping litter or failing to clear up pet waste.

Failure to pay the fines could result in a prosecution through the courts with a maximum fine of £2,500.

Councillor Gerry Ryan, cabinet member for highways, transport and public services, is confident that the new scheme will improve the look of Croydon's streets.

"It's something that we think will capture the borough's imagination. We hope we will be able to encourage persistent litter offenders to change their habits. Now we have the power to issue fines, it's only right we use that legislation imaginatively.

"We think it's an excellent new initiative, and one that the people of Croydon will welcome."

Council wardens will be on hand around the town centre to watch out for litter louts. To help residents do the right thing they will be carrying poop scoop bags and small personal ashtrays.

If the scheme is a success in the town centre the council will consider extending it to other shopping areas throughout the borough.
