A scheme targeting young children and their families in some of the borough's most deprived areas is well under way with the launch this month of two new initiatives.

An art and craft workshop and a parent group have been set up in Sutton's northern wards under the government-backed Sure Start scheme.

Held by local parent Sarah Duggan, the messy time workshop runs every Thursday from 10am to 11.30am at the Riverside Centre in Durand Close.

Entry is free to all children under four who live in the scheme's catchment area located around Middleton Circle in Carshalton.

A parent group has also been started to involve parents and carers in the scheme's decision-making process.

It has six places allocated to it on the Sure Start management board and the group has responsibility for voting in new members.

The group, which will meet every other Friday, is planning to hold its next meeting at the Thornton Road Centre, 204 Thornton Road, Carshalton on Monday, June 9, from 9.15am to 11.15am.

Several topics including summer holiday activity planning and developing services will be discussed at future meetings.
