I read a notice in your paper a short time ago about a concert at Carshalton House Water Tower by a quartet of young French string players.
Not having any connections with the Friends of the Water Tower, who organised the concert, I write entirely as a member of the audience.
In view of the rarity of
cultural events of any standard in this borough, I was particularly disappointed that the local press was not represented.
The gifted young players gave a highly professional performance before an appreciative audience of all ages, who filled the orangery and the adjoining area.
A report in the paper could be an element in renewing the cultural level that we used to enjoy.
I remember the visits to Sutton of Sir Thomas Beecham and his symphony orchestra and I remember the Chilingirian Quartet playing late Beethoven quartets in Sutton
Library.
The public, as you know, is greatly influenced by the press.
The demand for cultural events is here, but the supply is lacking.
