Sutton Future Network has been talking to the Environment Agency about fly-tipping problems.

Fly-tipping often emanates from residents' homes without them

realising it.

In order to reduce the amount of unsightly fly-tipping, the agency is asking people who have rubbish to dispose of to make sure they only let it be taken by responsible contractors who are legally entitled to do so.

Sutton Future Network suggests the following advice:

l Never pay cash. Always write a cheque to a named person and keep a note of who that person is.

l If responding to an advert, keep a note of what it says.

l If someone calls uninvited offering to remove your rubbish, make a note of the registration numbers of any vehicles involved.

l Ask them for their waste carrier's licence number, it will be in the form GTL/123456 and phone the agency on 01276 454333 to check if they are legitimate. If they cannot satisfy the above conditions you are advised not to use them and that way it will not be your rubbish that ends up blocking the highway or gets dumped on someone else's land.

Fly-tipping is illegal. If you see anyone doing it take down their vehicle registration and let Sutton Council know on 020 8770 6055.

If you would like to know more about local environmental projects, call 020 8770 6611.
