A TEACHER left bruised after walking into a market stall says she is overjoyed to hear the operator could be axed.

Elaine Everest, 51, suffered a black eye and bruised arm after walking into a metal bar on a stall at Swanley Market.

The creative writing teacher says obstructed walkways left her with no choice but to duck and weave blindly round tarpaulin, stalls and stock leading to the collision.

Operator Wendy Fair Markets, of Ruislip, Middlesex, has come to Swanley Town Council's notice after a history of "apparent disregard" to highlighted problems.

On June 8, the council's environment and amenities committee recommended the market contract, which runs out in October, is put out to tender.

Councillor Barrie Wigg highlighted how Wendy Fair has flouted five of the 17 operating rules laid down including obstructing emergency routes.

He added how difficult it is for pedestrians to get through with poles being dropped and vehicles reversing.

He said: "I have monitored the operation of the market very closely and there are no gangways for pedestrians never mind emergency vehicles resulting in very dangerous situations."

Following the committee's decision, the town council cabinet, which meets on June 20, is expected to inform Sevenoaks District Council, which negotiates the deal.

Swanley's assistant town clerk Chris Drake added: "The response from Wendy Fair to the concerns has often been one of apparent disregard."

Mrs Everest, of Oliver Road, Swanley, says she is delighted the town council has decided to take action over the incident.

She said: "I contacted the operators and have received no apology.

"I am delighted the council has recommended Wendy Fair's contract should not be renewed. When I told them about my accident they did not want to know."

Wendy Fair has run the market since 2000.

The director of Wendy Fair Market Nick Hobday said: "It is totally untrue that we have had any problems with the contract.

"Sevenoaks District Council has had no cause to complain."
