REED beds are the latest addition to a riverfront nature reserve on Erith Marshes.

Owned and managed by Thames Water, Crossness Nature Reserve, off Norman Road, Belvedere, has been playing host to volunteers who were helping warden Karen Sutton to plant reeds along the dykes which criss-cross the site.

The reed beds will help protect the endangered watervoles on the reserve from predators such as owls and herons.

The work is part of a series of improvements to the reserve, including a new viewing platform and a mini-beast area designed for school visits.

Although most of the reserve is open to the public, sensitive areas are restricted to members of the Crossness Nature Reserve Friends.

Membership also includes invitations to take part in practical conservation work as well as regular newsletters and updates on wildlife sightings.

Membership costs £5 for a year or £10 for three years. Joint memberships cost £8 or £15 and children can join free.
