A PRISON mate of two 20-year-old men accused of murdering and robbing a doctor gave evidence at the Old Bailey this afternoon.

Blue Doneo shared a cell at Feltham Prison with William Paton, of Clarendon Way, St Paul's Cray, prior to Paton going on trial.

The court heard Doneo also met Paton's co-defendent Thomas Connor at the same prison in Middlesex.

Paton and Connor deny murdering and robbing Nadim Gulamhuseinwala, 32, in Green Park near Buckingham Palace last July.

Doneo said while he and Connor, of Curtismill Way, St Paul's Cray, were in the same wing at Feltham, Connor tried to get him to write a reference claiming Connor was "regretful and sorry".

Doneo said a remorseful statement, prepared entirely by Connor but as if written by Doneo, was passed to him to "put into his own words" but he refused to help.

Doneo told the court today, although he kept hold of the written statement, he didn't want to "falsify" evidence.

But Nicholas Hilliard, who is defending Connor, said: "The document, you say, is asking you to give false evidence.

"Why would you want to keep a document like that?"

When Doneo couldn't answer, Mr Hilliard continued: "You can't tell the jury why you wanted to keep a piece of paper that would appear to read that you were falsifying evidence.

"I suggest there was nothing the matter with [the letter] at all."

The court has heard that Dr Gulamhuseinwala, from Ealing, was returning home from a nightclub at around 4am on July 25 when he was attacked as his spoke to his girlfriend on the phone.

Although Connor admits to hitting wealthy Dr Gulamhuseinwala with a metal pole he denies intending to cause any serious harm.

Paton says he did not see the attack because he was behind a tree and claims he only rifled through the unconscious man's pockets afterwards because Connor told him to.

Both defendents admit they spent Dr Gulamhuseinwala's money on a prostitute after the assault.

He died from head injuries two weeks later.

The case continues.
