ON THE ROOF: London Mayor Ken Livingstone and Lord Rogers, his chief adviser on architecture, are calling for greater use of roof spaces. Their statement entitled Living Roofs, promoting green roofs, roof terraces and roof gardens across London, aims to maximise access to private open space for residents who may not have access to extensive private gardens.

WALK ON: Greenwich town centre and Blackheath Village have been highlighted as pleasant places to walk around. They were mentioned as part of a Department for Transport campaign to de-clutter London's streets by removing unnecessary signs, poles and bollards. English Heritage and the Women's Institute are backing the campaign.

TALKING SHOP: The Christmas Day (Trading) Act, which aims to stop large stores opening on December 25, has passed the final stage in the House of Commons. The bill, supported by shopworkers' union Usdaw, is awaiting Royal Assent, before becoming law.

HELPING HOSPICE: Employees of a travel business dressed as ancient Greeks to raise money for charity. Staff from Weller's Travel, Stratheden Parade, Blackheath, raised £90 for Greenwich and Bexley Cottage Hospice.
