THE Mayor of London has confirmed Phase 2 of the East London Line extension is an essential part of his transport project.

Ken Livingstone gave the news to Labour MPs including Joan Ruddock, who represents Lewisham, Deptford, during a recent meeting.

This followed the Government's granting of permission for a five-year programme to cover the first phase of the project.

The MPs were concerned the second phase from Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction which would provide a new station in Deptford at Surrey Canal Road might not be secure.

Mr Livingstone explained he intended to roll forward the programme by seeking new funding every two to four years, making 2008 the latest date at which funding would be sought for Phase 2.

Phase 1 is expected to be completed by 2009. This will see the existing Tube station at New Cross Gate hook up with the overland network through Lewisham borough to West Croydon, with new links at Brockley, Honor Oak Park, Forest Hill, Sydenham and Crystal Palace.
