SHORTLISTED: Greenwich Council has been shortlisted for the UK Housing Awards in the category for Good Practice in Promoting Diversity. The council's housing service for older people was chosen for a variety of reasons, including its work to encourage more ethnic minority residents to use sheltered housing.

ON SHOW: A permanent installation by textile artist Christine Risley has been opened at the Constance Howard Textiles Centre, Goldsmiths College, Lewisham Way, New Cross. Christine Risley, a former head of the department, died last year. The installation opens to the public on December 2.

IN CONCERT: The Royal Artillery Band is to perform a series of charity concerts. These include a tribute to swing on November 23, a Christmas event on December 14, an evening on the Orient Express on January 25 and a Valentine's special on February 15. Call 020 8921 5065 for tickets.

BOOK PRIZE: This year's Nestle Smarties Book Prize, the UK's biggest children's book awards, will be judged by pupils from Deansfield Primary School, Dairsie Road, Eltham. Results will be announced in December.

ON THE BUSES: The Met's 765 special constables will be given free travel on London's public transport. The scheme has been developed to improve safety on buses and trains.
