A MAN posing as a council contractor has been asking people to pay for repairs to the pavements outside their homes.

Bexley Council has issued a warning to people after the man was reported operating in the Sidcup area.

The man tells residents he needs a cash payment immediately to enable the work to be done, and promises them the council will pay them back.

Bexley says it never asks for payment direct from residents for repairs being done to any public areas. It also never asks for cash on the doorstep.

Council employers and contractors always carry identification and will be happy for people to call and confirm their identity.

Arrangements for any access to private property or for work such as vehicle crossovers, will be made in advance, together with estimates and payment details.
