ROAD safety officials have launched a campaign to urge drivers and passengers to belt up.

Bromley Council has joined up with south east London colleagues and the Met Police after research showed more than a third of vehicle occupants fail to wear seatbelts.

From next week, hit squads will be out in the borough carrying out roadside checks.

Almost 90 per cent of people killed in the borough in the last three years were not wearing belts when they crashed, accident figures show.

John Walton, head of the council's road safety unit said: "Putting your seatbelt on is an easy life-saving precaution to take. Don't take a chance, it's just not worth it."
