THE countdown to Christmas is underway. Father Christmas and his reindeer arrived in Bexleyheath on Sunday, accompanied by elves, fairies, stilt walkers and even a Scottish pipe band.

Crowds filled the Broadway as the Christmas parade made its way to the Mall, where Bexley's mayor Councillor John Eastaugh helped Santa switch on the town's Christmas lights.

Also launched on Sunday was an open air artificial skating rink. Situated in the Broadway, the rink holds 40 skaters and it will be open daily (excluding Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New year's Day) until January 6.

It will be open during November and January from 11am until 6pm, (9pm on Thursdays), and in December from 11am until 9pm (6pm on Sundays).
