A PSYCHOLOGIST thought a man accused of killing a doctor may have suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, a court heard this afternoon.

William Paton, aged 20, of Clarendon Way, St Paul's Cray, denies murdering and robbing Nadim Gulamhuseinwala, 32, near Buckingham Palace last summer.

He says co-defendent Thomas Connor, of Curtismill Way, St Paul's Cray, ordered him to steal Dr Gulamhuseinwala's wallet and phone after Connor had struck his victim with a metal pole and stamped on his head.

Paton claims he did not see the assault take place because he was behind a tree.

But Andrew Edis, prosecuting, told the jury Paton had admitted to a psychologist this year that he has suffered flashbacks of the attack, which took place on July 25 in Green Park.

He also said the same psychologist had indicated Paton may be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Last week the jury heard how Paton and 20-year-old Connor had spent cash stolen from the victim on a prostitute in the hours after the attack.

Today, Paton revealed the pair had also bought cocaine with the £110 in Mr Gulamhuseinwala's wallet.

Mr Edis said: "You could have helped Dr Gulamhuseinwala but you didn't. Why?"

Regular cocaine user Paton answered: "Because I was frightened to say anything."

Mr Edis went on to say: "Do you think you did anything wrong?", to which Paton said: "I do now because I went through an unconscious man's pockets.

"But I only did that because I was told to."

Connor admits to hitting Dr Gulamhuseinwala with a 5kg metal pole but denies intending to cause any serious harm.

Both men have admitted being drunk and high on cocaine at the time of the assault, which was captured on CCTV.

The prosecution say the pair planned to rob the doctor.

Connor and Paton deny murder and robbery.

The trial continues.
