NEW embankments are to be created in preparation for theforthcoming widening of Thames Road, Crayford, into a dual carriageway.

The work, which will begin on Friday, will build up the low-lying areas of Crayford Marshes, between the River Cray and the railway line and between the Thames Road depot and Bob Dunn Way, formerly University Way.

The work needs to be done as soon as possible because the ground below the surface is soft.

The embankments, which will be made heavier with extra fill, will compress the ground in readiness for the new road layers, which will be laid on top.

There will be a public exhibition of the £21.7 million project early next year to update residents and businesses on the plans and to introduce the project team.

The road-widening is being paid for by the London Mayor and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

The work will begin next summer and is expected to be completed by the autumn of 2007.

One of the major elements of the scheme will be the replacement of the railway bridge.
