OLYMPIC cycling stars are urging young cyclists to wear helmets while riding their bikes.

Nicole Cooke and Jamie Staff, who have both taken part in Athens, have joined forces with the Department of Transport as part of its THINK! campaign to make cycling safer.

In the three years until 2003, one child cyclist in Bexley was killed and 70 injured, 11 of them seriously.

Bexley Council's road safety unit has a number of RightTrack courses running over the summer aimed at giving children on-road cycling skills.

The free 10-hour courses take place over five days and are aimed at children aged 10 and above.

For free copies of the THINK! campaign's Cycle Smart comic aimed at seven to 11-year-olds, or to find out more about cycle courses for youngsters, call the council's road safety unit on 020 8303 7777 ext 3182.
